technology came to the village

in the late 60's tv came to her village in the form of a single black and white unit at her immediate neighbour's house.

so nights were no longer silent and dark. for this enterprising neighbour turned his house into a mini cinema! the whole village would convene here especially on friday nights when Malay movies were shown. they'd sit on mats and plastic sheets on the lawn, faces turned to the 20 inch screen, munching tapioca chips, keropok or peanuts. mothers and girls sat in the front. fathers and boys at the back. the boys would throw small stones at the girls' backs. children ran around disturbing everybody. there was much laughter and chatting.

it was so much fun. it was free. it brought the villagers together. nearly every night.

food was also sold, delicious fried bihun, laksa at 10 sen a  small plate. ais kerim Malaysia at  5 sen a piece. and during Aidilfitri the neighbour sold mee kuah at 30 sen a big plate!
