starry starry nite

once a month there was excitement in the village. rickety stalls were hastily put up at the perimeter of the chinese school field at the edge of the tiny pekan. laksa, corn, kacang putih  were some of the delicacies sold. after maghrib prayers folks hurried to the venue with mats in their hands. they wanted to get the best seat.

parents with small children sat at the front, nearest to the huge screen. teenagers loitered at the back, young girls with ribboned pony tails coyly stole glances at brylcreem haired gangly boys.

it was the night when mostly cowboy films were screened in the open air for the people, either by the information department or by private companies. there was no television then. and there was not much money for the fisher folks and farmers to waste at the movie theatres.

it was simple pure fun though most of the folks did not understand a word spoken in the films.
it was a night out for the hardworking folks, while the skies above sparkled with millions of brilliant stars!
