it was a long saturday afternoon. the weather was really fine, fluffy white clouds parading the sharp turquoise sky.
she thought of the sea, and the nearest is pantai merdeka facing the andaman sea.
q patiently endured her 60 km per hr driving as they weaved through quaint villages including the historic sungai emas where an ancient settlement of brick palaces and other buildings from the Malay 2 AD old kedah empire were found a number of years ago.
she brought the five kids to the excavation site about 7 years ago. lily, dyr and naj followed her to see the relics and artefacts and listened as she talked to an archaeology professor from ukm. but q and bill had to be dragged from the car!
pantai merdeka was pretty crowded but they found shaded seats under huge casuarina trees. she ate some kueh enjoying the lovely vista, the mesmerising shimmering waves, the two little islands in the hazy distance.
she would have stayed longer but q was restless. on the way home they stopped at the ancient kota kuala muda, once a magnificent fort at an important port on the sungai muda where large ships from far away lands stopped with their cargo to trade for gold, ivory, spice.
she pictured the bustling, vibrant port in its heyday, swarming with merchants from every corner of the old world.... shouts, loud voices in numerous languages, what color, what excitement.....in a heady scent of cinnamon, pepper, cloves.....
what magic.....
